What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that allows a person to use creative expression to gain insight into their challenges and establish solutions. Art Therapy may only ethically be provided by a Master’s level Art Therapist. Art therapy is conducted in a safe and confidential environment where clients are invited to use different art medium to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.
No artistic skill is required to gain benefit from art therapy. Art therapy focuses on the "creating" processes during counseling, allowing both assessment and growth to occur in each session. The artworks of each session allow participants to voice out difficult experiences, thoughts, and feelings in visual and tangible forms. Concurrently, clients can be reflective and understand patterns of feeling, behaviors and thoughts that block happiness and growth.
